Introduction
For twenty-five years, I worked as a Dietitian in nursing homes in Steuben and neighboring counties. We tried to make each of our elderly Residents as happy and as comfortable as possible. Of course, we could not make them young again; we started where they were, and worked from there. Some of their stories became poems for me, full of humor and of tragedy.

Mrs. Vail
“Stop, Nurse!” says Mrs. Vail,
“I want to tell you something!”
Nurse stops and smiles,
Mrs. Vail says, “I am John Vail’s mother.”
Nurse smiles, says, “I know that.”
Mrs. Vail says, “And, I want to be your mother, too.”
Nurse smiles, says, “That would be nice.
I would like that.”
Mrs. Vail wheels off down the hall
happy as a child with a lollipop.

Introduction
The title of this book is the title of a poem I wrote in 2018 at the age of 89 for Just Poets’ annual anthology, Le Mot Juste. Both the poem and the book are about being old. Since getting old is likely different for each of us, this is, of course, about my own aging.
Hanging by a Limb

the limb sags a little;
year by year
my hands slip a little;
year by year
my arms tire;
but the view is spectacular.
