Day 5
August 16
Mid-morning, making time on I-25 heading toward Casper. A little over 300 miles to drive today with a reading in Cody at 7 PM. Want to make at least two stops along the way - the first at Hell's Half Acre and the second at the Hot Springs in Thermopolis. So making time when we can. Just beyond Casper we get back on regular old US 20 again.
North of Casper there's another big wildfire - on the east side of the Bighorn Mountains I've been told. Very hazy off in that direction. We'll be off to the west of the Bighorns, hopefully not impacted too much by the smoke.
Deer Creek Range of mountains parallels us to the south, the first range we've been near. Mountains will be part of our landscape for the next 11 days or so. Not just in the west now, but the western mountains!
Oil derricks here and there in view. Not a lot yet, just a lone one every once in awhile. I expect we'll see more in places as we go along.
Carolyn driving this morning. Grayson and I have put on most of the miles. Chapin reading a Redwall book and Grayson listening to music, Rusted Root at the moment. We got up early today so we can get moving. Tonight's reading is the last of three in a row and then no programs scheduled again until a week from today. So, no time urgencies after today - no concerns about getting to a certain place by a certain time.
